Abstract:
The chief objective of this paper is to explore how Joachim of Fiore formulates his original conception of divine predestination in book I of the Dialogi de prescientia Dei et predestinatione electorum, on the basis of his interpretation of Rom. 9, in particular the passage about the election of Jacob and the rejection of Esau, with focus on his Patristic sources. Joachim's view of divine election goes back not only to Augustine's doctrine, which is expressed in De diversis quaestionibus ad Simplicianum, but also to Origen's Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans
