Abstract:
In recent years, several independent studies have suggested that calcium (Ca) and Ca-dependent processes may play a role in mood disorders.1 In this context, particularly relevant are the findings’ that, as a group, untreated bipolar patients, either in the manic or depressive phases, have augmented base-line and stimulated cytosolic free Ca ([Cal1) concentrations in the platelets compared to controls and that some apparent normalization of base-line and stimulated [Cal1 possibly occurs in treated euthimic bipolars.
