Abstract:
fMRI, EEG, and MEG are complementary technologies with significant potential to investigate abnormalities in brain activity and functional connectivity in neurodegenerative diseases. While fMRI provides more detailed spatial resolution of functional brain changes, EEG and MEG offer unparalleled temporal resolution, enabling the detection of rapid neural dynamics. These methods, individually or in combination, are valuable tools for early diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and prognostication in the appropriate clinical context. They also hold promise for predicting treatment responses and enabling therapeutic monitoring. Beyond clinical applications, fMRI, EEG, and MEG contribute to scientific insights into neurodegenerative processes. These include identifying compensatory hyperactivation of brain circuits, uncovering disruptions in neural oscillations across specific frequency bands, and exploring genetic modulation of functional brain activity. Together, these technologies provide a multifaceted approach to understanding and addressing the complexities of neurodegenerative diseases.
