abstract:
What does crown mean for philosophers? This short contribution aims at offering a narrative of the word ‘crown’ in a few accounts of political philosophy, in order to sketch a way of construing the idea of crown through exploring its relationship to the notion of power. In particular, I shall suggest that different relationships between crown and power can fit with specific kinds of account of individual sovereignty and freedom. Suggestions shall be drawn from Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Max Weber.
