Research interests:
1978-1982: Ultrastructural studies on the organization of intercellular junctions and of the surface of polarized cells.

1982-1988: Molecular characterization of cellular membranes in polarized cells. Mechanism for the transport of membrane proteins.

1988-1992: Molecular mechanisms of neuritogenesis during neuronal development.

Since March 1992: directing his laboratory at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute: role of adhesive receptors, GTPases, and their regulators in cell adhesion and cytoskeletal reorganization, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms regulating cell migration and neurite extension. For these studies we utilize approaches including molecular and cellular biology, immunochemistry, biochemistry, and mouse genetics.
