Abstract:
This article examines the interpretation of Aristotelian philosophy developed by Pietro Pomponazzi in his work De fato, focusing on the complex relationship between freedom and necessity within Renaissance Aristotelianism. The study argues that Pomponazzi represents a form of “problematic Aristotelianism”, in which the traditional authority of Aristotle is not simply accepted but critically re-examined in light of new scientific, ethical, and theological concerns. The paper reconstructs Pomponazzi’s philosophical path, showing how his thought moves beyond the rigid framework of scholastic Aristotelianism and confronts issues such as determinism, divine omnipotence, and human free will. In De fato, Pomponazzi explores the tension between the natural order governed by necessity and the human experience of freedom, attempting to reconcile Aristotelian physics with Christian doctrines without fully subordinating philosophy to theology.
