Abstract:
In this paper, I offer a phenomenological analysis of the scandalized body through the case of Michael Jackson, understood as a body persistently exposed to public scrutiny, objectification, and media qualification. Drawing on Jackson's life history, I examine how dermatological conditions, media sensationalism, and the accusations reshaped the lived experience of embodiment, producing a tension between the lived body (Leib) and the object body (Körper). My analysis brackets normative judgments to investigate the experiential structure of corporeality under constant public exposure. Finally, I argue that dance functioned as a form of bodily reappropriation, allowing the objectified body to be reconstituted as a lived, expressive, and meaningful body. The case of Jackson provides a phenomenological framework for understanding contemporary forms of hypervisibility, from celebrity culture to social media, in which continuous exposure transforms the experience of one's own body.
