PIEMONTI LORENZO

Lorenzo Piemonti is the Director of the Diabetes Research Institute and Head of the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Transplantation at the Scientific Institute San Raffaele in Milan, Italy. He is also responsible for the Beta Cell Biology Unit and Director of the Human Islet Processing Facility. He coordinated the European Consortium for Islet Transplantation since 2000, providing human beta cell products for research and clinical applications. He is a Professor of Endocrinology at the "Vita Salute San Raffaele" University in Milan and served as a Visiting Professor at the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels from 2016 to 2022.

His research focuses on diabetes, pancreatology, and regenerative medicine, with an emphasis on pathophysiology, innovative therapies, and precision medicine. He studies beta cell replacement therapies, immune tolerance induction strategies, and dendritic cell biology. He is particularly interested in beta cell differentiation and maturation, the development of biomaterials for islet transplantation, and strategies to protect beta cells from immune-mediated damage in autoimmune diabetes. Additionally, his work explores immune tolerance in the context of transplants, studying mechanisms to prevent transplant rejection while minimizing systemic immunosuppression.

Piemonti has also worked on stem cell differentiation to generate insulin-producing cells for therapeutic purposes and the development of bioengineered pancreases and organoids to study diabetes pathogenesis. He has made significant contributions to pancreatic oncology, studying interactions between tumor cells, stromal cells, and the tumor microenvironment, and exploring new therapeutic strategies using regenerative medicine and immunomodulatory therapies.

He is currently a Section Editor for Cell Transplantation and an Associate Editor for Transplant International and Journal of Endocrinological Investigation. He will serve as President of the International Pancreas and Islet Transplantation Association (IPITA) for the period 2025–2027 and is a member of various international scientific committees.
