Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyse the passage from the infernal relational dynamics described in Sartre’s Being and Nothingness to the possibility of building an Existentialist ethics sketched in his Notebooks for an Ethics. These notes were published only posthumously and constitute the main Sartrean attempt to develop his idea of radical and absolute freedom in a normative and moral system. In this text, Sartre evolves his concepts of alienation, violence and oppression in a historical context and he tries to indicate a moral way to get out of the vicious circle created by the ethics of force. The other is not only a threat but he/she becomes a fragile freedom, a subject who attempts to act freely in a dangerous situation. This new way of being with the other also implies a different relationship with oneself and the world.
